Simon's treasure is under a water park

Raft Wars 2 is a turn-by-turn shooting game from Martijn Kunst, made with the Dutch team TinyDobbins, and it follows on from the first Raft Wars. The opening comic recaps the earlier story: young Simon dug up gold and diamonds on the beach near his home and, with his brother, fought off everyone who wanted a share. Before a long holiday the boys buried the loot to keep it away from their greedy parents and the tax collectors. When they sail home, a water park called Aqualand has been built right over the spot. Their plan is simple: soak the staff and visitors until the park goes out of business, then dig the treasure back up.

The game started life as a Flash title and was later rebuilt in HTML5, so it now runs in a desktop browser and on phones.

Controls

Each battle is a duel of turns. When the screen says it is your turn, click and drag to aim, then let go to fire. On a touch screen you drag with a finger instead. Your basic ammunition is a tennis ball. Soak every opponent to see Battle Won; if they get the better of you, the screen reads Battle Lost and you can try again.

Levels and enemies

Every stage has a name and its own set of opponents. Early ones include The paint bucket, Security trouble and Greedy neighbours, and later you face The shrimp mascot, a Heli attack, Angry builders, Octomom, Whaling Whalers, a Drone attack and Turtle warriors before the finale, The big explosion. Between some stages short comic scenes move the plot along, including a dead whale that drifts toward the park and becomes part of the boys' final plan.

After a win, the results screen shows shots fired, time used and how many baddies you soaked, plus your total score and the credits you earned. Each level asks you to finish within a set number of shots to collect three stars. Once a stage is unlocked you can also replay it on the harder Heroic setting.

The shop

Credits are spent in the upgrades screen before a battle. The special ammunition comes in three kinds: grenades, rockets and a triple-ball shot that fires three tennis balls together. You can hold up to three of each. The shop also sells raft upgrades, and each one costs more than the one before.

Tips

• Fewer shots means more stars, so take a moment to line up each throw instead of firing fast.
• Special shots are capped at three each, so there is no point hoarding credits for a fourth; spend them on a raft upgrade instead.
• Heroic mode is picked on the level select screen, with its own button beside the normal play button, so check which one you press.
